Abstract

Metadonus fernandoi sp. n., a new species of weevil found in the subarid area of Los Monegros (Aragon, Zaragoza, Spain) which is situated in the central depression of the Ebro river valley, is described. This species belongs to the “M. anceps group” by the presence of setae on the apex of the penis, this not being distinctly elongate and asymmetrical apically, differring mainly from other species in the genus by the scales on pronotum and elytra oval and distinctly bifid (the rest of species presents the scales indistinctly bifid), except M. vuillefroyanus (Capiomont, 1868) which also has similar scales on pronotum and elytra. However, both species are different in size, colouration and chromatic pattern of scales, shape of pronotum and elytra, morphology of the penis and basal endophallus and the spermatheca and female sternite VIII among other differences. Biology, ecology and distribution of the new species as well as data about M. vuillefroyanus are discussed.
