				<p>Leptostracans from western Iberian Peninsula are comparatively better known than in the Mediterranean coasts. The presence of <italic>Nebalia troncosoi</italic> <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-8-e132">Moreira, Cacabelos &#x0026; Dom&#x00ED;nguez, 2003</xref> is reported for the first time for the Iberian Mediterranean from specimens collected in 2014 off the Ebro Delta river mouth. Material examined fits well with original description including the following diagnostic features: long rostrum (four times as long as wide), a short carapace, one distal spine on the antennule peduncle fourth article, antennule flagellum shorter than the peduncle and provided with 6&#x02013;7 articles, maxilla II exopod longer than endopod first article, posterodorsal borders of pleonites VI&#x02013;VII provided with distally acute denticles and anal plates lacking defined &#x02018;shoulders&#x02019;.</p>

				<p>Los leptostr&#x00E1;ceos de las costas occidentales de la pen&#x00ED;nsula Ib&#x00E9;rica han sido comparativamente mejor estudiados que los de las mediterr&#x00E1;neas en los &#x00FA;ltimos a&#x00F1;os. En este trabajo se reporta por primera vez la presencia de <italic>Nebalia troncosoi</italic> <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-8-e132">Moreira, Cacabelos &#x0026; Dom&#x00ED;nguez, 2003</xref> en las costas del Mediterr&#x00E1;neo ib&#x00E9;rico a partir de ejemplares recogidos en 2014 frente al Delta del Ebro. El material examinado coincide con la descripci&#x00F3;n original de la especie, que est&#x00E1; caracterizada por presentar un rostro largo (cuatro veces m&#x00E1;s largo que ancho), un caparaz&#x00F3;n corto en relaci&#x00F3;n a su altura, el cuarto artejo del ped&#x00FA;nculo de la ant&#x00E9;nula con una &#x00FA;nica espina distal, el flagelo antenular m&#x00E1;s corto que el ped&#x00FA;nculo y compuesto por 6&#x02013;7 artejos, el exopodio de la maxilla II m&#x00E1;s largo que el primer artejo del endopodio, el borde dorsal y posterodorsal de los pleonitos VI&#x02013;VII con dent&#x00ED;culos agudos y las escamas anales sin una meseta definida en el borde medial.</p>

		<p>Extant leptostracans (Crustacea: Phyllocarida: Leptostraca) have been extensively studied in the last years in the Iberian Peninsula, with nine species reported or described from the northern and western coasts: <italic>Nebalia bipes</italic> (Fabricius, 1780), <italic>N. herbstii</italic> Leach, 1814, <italic>N. strausi</italic> Risso, 1826, <italic>N. troncosoi</italic> <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-8-e132">Moreira, Cacabelos &#x0026; Dom&#x00ED;nguez, 2003</xref>, <italic>N. kocatasi</italic> Moreira, Ko&#x00E7;ak &#x0026; Katagan, 2007, <italic>N. reboredae</italic>
			<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-10-e132">Moreira &#x0026; Urgorri, 2009</xref>
			<italic>in</italic>

			<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-11-e132">Moreira, Gestoso &#x0026; Troncoso, 2003</xref> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-1-e132">Aguirrezabalaga <italic>et al</italic>., 1988</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-8-e132">Moreira <italic>et al</italic>., 2003a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-11-e132">2003b</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-13-e132">2004</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-9-e132">2009a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-10-e132">2009b</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-6-e132">Mart&#x00ED;nez <italic>et al</italic>., 2007</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-7-e132">Moreira, 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-14-e132">Sampaio <italic>et al</italic>., 2016</xref>). Most of previous records corresponded to <italic>N. bipes</italic> but its presence in southern European latitudes and Iberian waters is doubtful (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-3-e132">Dahl, 1985</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-7-e132">Moreira, 2015</xref>). In comparison, records of leptostracans from the southern and the Mediterranean coasts are scarce and mostly correspond to <italic>N. strausi</italic> (e.g., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-3-e132">Dahl, 1985</xref>); recently, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-15-e132">Taboada <italic>et al</italic>. (2016)</xref> recorded <italic>N. kocatasi</italic> from Blanes and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-12-e132">Moreira &#x0026; Junoy (2017)</xref> also reported the genus <italic>Paranebalia</italic> Claus, 1880 for the Balearic Islands.</p>
		<p>Examination of leptostracans collected in Ebro Delta offshore has revealed the presence of <italic>N. troncosoi</italic> that was originally described from Galicia, and later reported from the Bay of Biscay (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-6-e132">Mart&#x00ED;nez <italic>et al</italic>., 2007</xref>), Portugal (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-14-e132">Sampaio <italic>et al</italic>., 2016</xref>), Morocco (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-2-e132">Bayed &#x0026; Bazairi, 2017</xref>) and from both Atlantic and Mediterranean French coast (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-4-e132">Latry &#x0026; Droual, 2020</xref>). This record fills, therefore, the gap in the distribution of <italic>N. troncosoi</italic> in the eastern Iberian Peninsula.</p>
		<p>The study area (40&#x00B0;38'53.8"&#x02013;40&#x00B0;39'36.48" N / 0&#x00B0;51'59.1"&#x02013;0&#x00B0;51'38.01" E) was located in the inner continental shelf at 4.71 miles offshore from the Ebro Delta river mouth, 2.04 miles offshore the coast and at depths between 11 and 14 m. Sampling was part of the DELTA campaigns, which aimed to monitor the community structure of macrofauna (among others) along a 3-year period and to relate it to their environment. Different types of samples were taken, e.g., macrofauna, benthic fish (<italic>Solea solea</italic> (Linnaeus, 1758), <italic>S. senegalensis</italic> Kaup, 1858 and <italic>Mullus</italic> spp.), and sediments. Macrofauna sampling was carried out using a Van Veen grab (KC DENMARK A/S) of 0.05 m<sup>2</sup> on soft bottoms. Grab samples were carefully sieved over a 0.5-mm mesh and stored in &#x003E;90% ethanol. Samples were examined under a Leica EC3 stereomicroscope with camera, and digital images were captured by the LAS-EZ V2 software (Leica Microsystems). Drawings were done with the aid of a camera lucida connected to a compound microscope and measurements were made with an ocular micrometer. The following measurements were considered: total length (TL; distance from the articulation between the rostrum and carapace to the posterior end of the uropods not considering setation), rostrum length (RL; distance along the midline), dorsal carapace length (DCL; distance between the articulation of the rostrum and the margin of the posterodorsal cleft), lateral carapace length (LCL; distance along lateral surface between the anterior-most and posterior-most margins) and carapace height (CH; distance between the dorsal and ventral margin). The abbreviated description corresponds to two mature females (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-3-e132">Dahl, 1985</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-5-e132">Martin <italic>et al</italic>., 1996</xref>) and focuses in diagnostic characters. Specimens are deposited in the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN), Madrid.</p>

		<p>S<sc>hort description of females</sc>
		</p>
		<p>Carapace, rostrum and eye: Carapace covering at least lateral sides of pleonites 1&#x02013;3; LCL 1.24&#x02013;1.28 times CH. Rostrum long, with parallel margins, length about 4.1 times width, 0.5&#x02013;0.55 times length of DCL (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-1-e132">Figs. 1A, 2A, C</xref>). Eye 0.4 times length of rostrum; ommatidia numerous, distributed along eye distal half (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-1-e132">Figs. 1A</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-2-e132">2B</xref>), with conspicuous dark pigment, more concentrated in central part with ommatidia; two small protuberances on distal inferior margin (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-2-e132">Fig. 2B</xref>).</p>
		<p>Antennae: Antennule peduncle fourth article with medial row of 7 simple setae and one distal thick spine (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-1-e132">Figs. 1A, B</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-2-e132">2D</xref>); antennular scale length 2.2 times width; flagellum shorter than peduncle, with seven articles. Antenna peduncle third article lateral margin with eight similar spine-like setae (Figs. 1A, 2F); flagellum slightly shorter than peduncle, with 8&#x02013;9 articles (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-1-e132">Figs. 1C</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-2-e132">2E</xref>).</p>
		<p>Mouthparts: Mandible with well-developed molar and incisor processes; incisor with sharp teeth along inner border, ending in acute process (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-3-e132">Fig. 3A</xref>); mandibular palp second article with two setae, distal-most the longest and about 0.5 times length of article; third article slightly longer than second. Maxilla I palp well-developed, about four times length of protopod (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-3-e132">Fig. 3B</xref>). Maxilla II endopod proximal article about 1.45 times length of distal article; exopod clearly surpassing level of articulation of endopod articles (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-3-e132">Fig. 3C</xref>); distal-most setae of endopod and exopod longer each than entire limb.</p>
		<p>Thoracopods: Thoracopods I&#x02013;VII with endopod longer than exopod (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-4-e132">Fig. 4A, B</xref>); endopod distal article slightly enlarged, with several long plumose setae (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-1-e132">Fig. 1C</xref>); endopod segmentation weak; exopod and epipod with several setae along posterior margin, less numerous on epipod (1&#x02013;3). Thoracopod VIII epipod smaller than in other thoracopods and lacking setae (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-4-e132">Fig. 4C</xref>).</p>
		<p>Pleonites and pleopods: Pleonite IV epimeron posterolateral corner forming triangular process acutely pointed (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-4-e132">Fig. 4E</xref>). Pleonites VI&#x02013;VII posterodorsal border bearing denticles acutely pointed (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-1-e132">Figs. 1D, 3D, E</xref>). Pleopod I exopod 0.75 times length of endopod; lateral border with &#x02018;comb-row&#x02019; of <italic>ca</italic>. 12 bi-pectinate setae (<italic>sensu</italic>
			<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-16-e132">Walker-Smith, 2000</xref>) (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-4-e132">Fig. 4D</xref>); protopod with long seta near posterior base of exopod, surpassing middle of &#x02018;comb-row&#x02019;. Pleopod IV protopod posterior border with four serrations, posterodistal corner acute (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-4-e132">Fig. 4E</xref>).</p>
		<p>Anal somite, anal plates and uropods: Anal somite about as long as pleonite VII (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-1-e132">Fig. 1D</xref>). Anal plates acutely tapering distally, lateral and medial margins sloping, &#x02018;shoulder&#x02019; not developed (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-4-e132">Fig. 4F</xref>). Uropods 0.85 times length of pleonite VII + anal somite; terminal seta at least two times length of ramus.</p>
		<p>M<sc>ale</sc>
		</p>
		<p>About 15 articles in antenna flagellum, showing incomplete divisions in proximal half; carapace slightly longer than in females: LCL 1.4 times CH; furca similar in length to pleonite VII + anal somite.</p>
		<p>D<sc>istribution and ecology</sc>. SW European Atlantic, from Normandy (France) to Figueira da Foz (Portugal) (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-4-e132">Latry &#x0026; Droual, 2020</xref>), Morocco (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-2-e132">Bayed &#x0026; Bazairi, 2017</xref>); French Mediterranean coasts (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-4-e132">Latry &#x0026; Droual, 2020</xref>); Ebro Delta coast (present work). Mainly in fine sand to muddy sand with <italic>Zostera marina</italic> L.; also reported in ma&#x00EB;rl, gravel, coarse and medium sand; at depths of 4.5&#x02013;54 m (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-6-e132">Mart&#x00ED;nez <italic>et al</italic>., 2007</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-10-e132">Moreira <italic>et al</italic>., 2009b</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-4-e132">Latry &#x0026; Droual, 2020</xref>). In this work, specimens were found within a typical macrofaunal community from marine muddy bottoms, numerically dominated by amphipods of the genus <italic>Ampelisca</italic> Kroyer, 1842.</p>
		<p>R<sc>emarks</sc>. The features of the specimens collected mostly agree with the original description. This species is mainly characterized by having a longer rostrum than other European <italic>Nebalia</italic> species (up to four times as long as wide), the antennule peduncle fourth article is only provided with one distal spine instead of two or more, the carapace in females is much shorter in comparison to height, the antennule flagellum is shorter than the peduncle and composed by up to seven articles, the maxilla II exopod is longer than the endopod proximal article and the anal plates lack defined &#x02018;shoulders&#x02019; along lateral margin. The denticles of the posterodorsal borders of pleonites VI&#x02013;VII are conspicuously acute distally; this character is only shared in European latitudes with <italic>N. strausi</italic>, that is a much larger species, whereas other species bear rounded to truncated denticles. The present findings fill the gap in the known distribution of <italic>N. troncosoi</italic> in the Iberian Peninsula; it is likely that this species might be also present through the coasts of northern Africa (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-2-e132">Bayed &#x0026; Bazairi, 2017</xref>) and the European western Mediterranean. However, more data are needed to truly assess the diversity and distribution of leptostracans in the eastern and southern Iberian Peninsula.</p>
