<p>The genus <italic>Lipara</italic> Meigen, 1830 (Diptera: Chloropidae) is known for its ability to induce galls in <italic>Phragmites australis</italic> (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., 1841 (Poaceae). Such galls are important microhabitats that give a resource to other Chloropid species that live in them. In the Iberian Peninsula, the <italic>Lipara</italic> galls and their associated fauna remain unstudied. Here, new records of <italic>Lipara lucens</italic> Meigen, 1830, <italic>L. similis</italic> Schiner, 1854 and their gall inquilines, <italic>Calamoncosis minima</italic> (Strobl, 1893) and <italic>Cryptonevra flavitarsis</italic> (Meigen, 1830) in the Iberian Peninsula are presented, combining both, field sampling and photosharing website information. <italic>Lipara lucens</italic>, <italic>C. minima</italic> and <italic>Cr. flavitarsis</italic> are recorded for the first time from the Spanish mainland.<italic></italic> Although they are an overlooked group of species, they seem to be widespread in the Iberian Peninsula.</p></abstract>

<p><bold>Nuevos datos sobre la distribuci&#x00F3;n de <italic>Lipara</italic> Meigen, 1830 (Diptera: Chloropidae) y sus clor&#x00F3;pidos inquilinos en la pen&#x00ED;nsula ib&#x00E9;rica</bold></p>
<p>El g&#x00E9;nero <italic>Lipara</italic> Meigen, 1830 (Diptera: Chloropidae) tiene la capacidad de inducir agallas en <italic>Phragmites australis</italic> (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., 1841 (Poaceae). Dichas agallas son microh&#x00E1;bitats importantes que aportan recursos a otros clor&#x00F3;pidos que viven dentro de ellas. En la pen&#x00ED;nsula ib&#x00E9;rica, las agallas de <italic>Lipara</italic> y la fauna asociada no han sido bien estudiadas. En este trabajo se recogen nuevas citas de <italic>Lipara lucens</italic> Meigen, 1830, <italic>L. similis</italic> Schiner, 1854 y sus inquilinos, <italic>Calamoncosis minima</italic> (Strobl, 1893) y <italic>Cryptonevra flavitarsis</italic> (Meigen, 1830) en la pen&#x00ED;nsula ib&#x00E9;rica, combinando muestreos en campo, con informaci&#x00F3;n disponible en portales fotogr&#x00E1;ficos. Se citan por primera vez en la Espa&#x00F1;a peninsular <italic>L. lucens</italic>, <italic>C. minima</italic> y <italic>Cr. flavitarsis</italic>.<italic></italic> A pesar de que son un grupo que ha sido poco estudiado, estas especies parecen estar ampliamente distribuidas por la pen&#x00ED;nsula ib&#x00E9;rica.</p>

<title>Introduction</title>
<p>Grass-flies (Diptera: Chloropidae) are a widely distributed Diptera family occupying a vast range of habitats, although most species prefer open habitats such as grasslands and wetlands (Nartshuk &#x0026; Andersson, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0029">2013</xref>; Nartshuk, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0028">2014</xref>) and most of them live on Poaceae and Cyperaceae (Nartshuk, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0028">2014</xref>). There are many studies about this group in Europe, some of them focused on the Mediterranean region (Collin, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0007">1946</xref>; De Bruyn, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0010">1989</xref>; Nartshuk, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0024">2004</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0025">2011</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0026">2012</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0027">2013</xref>; Nartshuk &#x0026; Andersson, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0029">2013</xref>), although the knowledge of the chloropid fauna of the Iberian Peninsula remains incomplete (De Bruyn, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0011">1999</xref>; De Bruyn &#x0026; B&#x00E1;ez, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0012">2002</xref>; Nartshuk, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0024">2004</xref>; Nartshuk <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0030">2013</xref>; Ebejer &#x0026; Andrade, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0014">2015</xref>).</p>
<p>Among Chloropidae genera, <italic>Lipara</italic> Meigen, 1830 has attracted the attention of entomologists for its ability to induce cigar-like apical galls on <italic>Phragmites australis</italic> (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., 1841 (Poaceae) (Chv&#x00E1;la <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0006">1974</xref>). There are four recognized species in Europe: <italic>L. lucens</italic> Meigen, 1830, <italic>L. pullitarsis</italic> Dosko&#x010D;il &#x0026; Chv&#x00E1;la, 1971, <italic>L. rufitarsis</italic> Loew, 1858 and <italic>L. similis</italic> Schiner, 1854. Their biology, taxonomy, ecology and distribution has been well studied in Europe (Mook, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0023">1967</xref>; Chv&#x00E1;la <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0006">1974</xref>; De Bruyn, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0009">1987</xref>; Grochowska, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0018">2006</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0019">2007</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0020">2013</xref>; Nartshuk, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0027">2013</xref>), although, up to now, there are few records in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Thus, Nartshuk (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0024">2004</xref>) recorded for the first time the genus <italic>Lipara</italic> (<italic>L. similis</italic>)<italic></italic> in the Province of Castell&#x00F3;n (Spain). Later, Ebejer (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0013">2006</xref>) cited <italic>L. lucens</italic>, <italic>L. rufitarsis</italic> and <italic>L. similis</italic> in Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) and finally, Ebejer &#x0026; Andrade (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0014">2015</xref>) recorded <italic>L. lucens</italic> from the district of Aveiro (Portugal). Thereby, the knowledge of <italic>Lipara</italic> species distribution and biology in the Iberian Peninsula remains inadequate.</p>
<p>Its life cycle is well understood (Chv&#x00E1;la <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0006">1974</xref>), as well as the development of the gall (Vandevyvere &#x0026; De Bruyn, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0035">1998</xref>). All <italic>Lipara</italic> species are univoltine and lay the eggs on <italic>P. australis</italic> leaves. After hatching, the phytophagous first instar larvae climbs to the stem apex and installs itself in the upper rolled leaves of the stem. The larva feeds on the enrolled leaves, starting the gall induction. Thereby, the newly formed internodes are shortened and thickened (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f0002">Figs. 2C-D</xref>). In the case of <italic>L. lucens</italic> and <italic>L. pullitarsis</italic>,<italic></italic> once the gall is completely developed, the third-instar larvae gnaws through the shoot apical meristem and feeds on the hypertrophied parenchyma. On the other hand, <italic>L. rufitarsis</italic> and <italic>L. similis</italic>, remain in the upper rolled and hardened leaves and feed on the panicle. Finally, the larva goes into diapause inside the gall until next spring, when it pupariates and later the adult emerges.</p>
<p>The galls of <italic>Lipara</italic>, especially those of <italic>L. lucens</italic>, also serve as microhabitats and important refuges for other chloropids and other insects such as Hymenoptera, Coleoptera or Lepidoptera (De Bruyn, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0008">1985</xref>; Nartshuk &#x0026; Andersson, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0029">2013</xref>; Heneberg <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0021">2014</xref>; Bogusch <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0003">2015</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0004">2016</xref>; Astapenkov&#x00E1; <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0001">2017</xref>).</p>

<sec id="sec2" sec-type="materials|methods">
<title>Materials and Methods</title>
<p>As galls are the extended phenotype of the cecidogenic organism (Stone &#x0026; Sch&#x00F6;nrogge, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0034">2003</xref>), it is enough to sample galls induced by <italic>Lipara</italic> in <italic>P. australis</italic> in order to identify the species. In this way, it is also possible to find the associated chloropids living as inquilines in those galls. Between January and October of 2017, one-year-old galls were sampled in several localities throughout Spain (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t0001">Table 1</xref>). They were kept individually in Petri dishes at room temperature until adult fly emergence. The galls were identified using the key of Chv&#x00E1;la <italic>et al</italic>. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0006">1974</xref>), and the chloropids inhabiting them were identified using keys of Grochowska (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0019">2007</xref>) and Nartshuk &#x0026; Andersson (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0029">2013</xref>).</p>

<p>Additionally, the photography collection of the &#x201C;Banco Taxon&#x00F3;mico y Faun&#x00ED;stico Digital de los Invertebrados Ib&#x00E9;ricos&#x201D; (BTFDII) (Biodiversidad Virtual, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0002">2017</xref>) were reviewed in order to look for <italic>Lipara</italic> records from other Spanish localities (see <xref ref-type="table" rid="t0001">Table 1</xref>).</p>
<p>New data of <italic>Lipara</italic> and other associated chloropids were displayed on a blank map of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands (Instituto Geogr&#x00E1;fico Nacional, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0022">2017</xref>) using ArcGis 10.5 (ESRI, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0015">2016</xref>).</p>

<sec id="sec3" sec-type="result">
<title>Results</title>
<p>The recorded species are listed, indicating the source of the individuals or galls examined (see <xref ref-type="table" rid="t0001">Table 1</xref> for localities). In the case that <italic>Lipara</italic> spp. individuals emerged from the collected galls, this is indicated in square brackets, preceded by the total number of galls collected. If the collector was different from the author, this is indicated.</p>

<p>The galls of this species were robust and cigar like, with 8 to 14 shortened internodes and showing a hairy layer in its upper zone (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f0002">Fig. 2C</xref>). The larvae or pupae were found living inside the internodes, below the growing point. The adults (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f0002">Fig. 2A</xref>) were about 6 to 8.5 mm.</p>
<p>D<sc>istribution</sc>: widely distributed in Europe and in the Mediterranean region. Previously reported in the ibero-balearic region from Mallorca island (Spain) (Ebejer, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0013">2006</xref>) and the district of Aveiro (Portugal) (Ebejer &#x0026; Andrade, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0014">2015</xref>).</p>
<p>B<sc>iology</sc>: The adults emerged from galls from April to early June. The photographs of BTFDII were taken from mid April to mid May.</p>

<p>The galls of this species were thin and cigar like. They had 3 shortened internodes (4 in some cases), and the upper ones were shorter than the basal. They lacked a hairy layer on the internodes (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f0002">Fig. 2D</xref>). The larvae or the pupae were found living between the enrolled and hardened upper leaves, above the growing point. The adults (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f0002">Fig. 2B</xref>) were about 4 to 6 mm long</p>
<p>D<sc>istribution</sc>: widely distributed species in Europe and in the Mediterranean region. Previously reported in the ibero-balearic region from the province of Castell&#x00F3;n (Nartshuk, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0024">2004</xref>) and Mallorca Island (Ebejer, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0013">2006</xref>) (Spain).</p>
<p>B<sc>iology</sc>: The adults emerged from galls from late April to early May. The photograph of BTFDII was taken in mid May.</p>

<title>Discussion</title>
<p>Chloropids are poorly studied in many areas (De Bruyn, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0011">1999</xref>) and thereby, their knowledge is still poor. In this work, the knowledge on the distribution of <italic>Lipara</italic> and other gall-inquiline chloropids is extended. Thus, <italic>L. lucens</italic>, <italic>Cr. flavitarsis</italic> and <italic>C. -minima</italic> are recorded for the first time from the Spanish mainland. They seem to be widespread in the ibero-balearic region, since they have been found from Portugal (Ebejer &#x0026; Andrade, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0014">2015</xref>) to the Balearic Islands (Ebejer, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0013">2006</xref>) and in many provinces of Spain (Nartshuk, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0024">2004</xref>). Furthermore, most of the Iberian Peninsula has a Mediterranean bioclimate (Rivas-Mart&#x00ED;nez <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0033">2004</xref>) and freshwater habitats are characterized by seasonal flood and dry periods (Gasith &#x0026; Resh, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0017">1999</xref>). These features are suitable for <italic>Lipara</italic> species, since they prefer <italic>Phragmites</italic> growing in temporary flooded sites (Mook, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0023">1967</xref>; Chv&#x00E1;la <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0006">1974</xref>; De Bruyn, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0009">1987</xref>).</p>
<p>Many of the inquiline chloropids that can inhabit <italic>Lipara</italic> galls (Nartshuk &#x0026; Andersson, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0029">2013</xref>) have already been documented in the Iberian Peninsula, although they have not always been recorded inhabiting galls: <italic>Calamoncosis minima</italic>, <italic>C. duiensis</italic>, <italic>Cryptonevra flavitarsis</italic>, <italic>Cr. nigritarsis</italic>, <italic>Elachiptera cornuta</italic>, <italic>Eribolus hungaricus</italic> and <italic>Incertella zuercheri</italic> (De Bruyn &#x0026; B&#x00E1;ez, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0012">2002</xref>; Ebejer, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0013">2006</xref>; Ebejer &#x0026; Andrade, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0014">2015</xref>). However, in this study, only two of them (<italic>C. minima</italic> and <italic>Cr. flavitarisis</italic>) have been recorded associated with <italic>Lipara lucens</italic> galls. Thus, <italic>Cr. flavitarsis</italic> seems to be a common inquiline of <italic>L. lucens</italic> galls in the study area, living in the rolled leaves of the upper part of the gall (Nartshuk &#x0026; Andersson <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0029">2013</xref>). On the other hand, based on the results, <italic>C. minima</italic> is more difficult to find living in <italic>Lipara</italic> galls.</p>
<p>It can be pointed out that the information available on the Internet turned out to be a useful source in the taxonomic (Zeegers &#x0026; &#x00C1;lvarez Fidalgo, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0036">2016</xref>), biogeographic (P&#x00E9;rez Hidalgo <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0032">2009</xref>; Garc&#x00ED;a-Barros <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0016">2011</xref>) and ethological studies (Olivero &#x0026; Robillar, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0031">2017</xref>). Nevertheless, such information should be up-to-date, reliable and comprehensive (Carling &#x0026; Harrison, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0005">1996</xref>). In this study, the records of BTFDII were useful to refine the distribution of <italic>Lipara</italic> spp. in the Iberian Peninsula. Nevertheless, further studies are necessary in order to improve the knowledge of the biology, distribution and associated fauna of <italic>Lipara</italic> spp.</p>
