			<title>UN POCO DE HISTORIA</title>
			<p>
				Antecedentes
			</p>
			<p>En las Memorias del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient&#x00ED;ficas (CSIC) del a&#x00F1;o 1943 se da cuenta del nacimiento de la revista GRAELLSIA, una publicaci&#x00F3;n que surge en el seno del Instituto Espa&#x00F1;ol de Entomolog&#x00ED;a, centro creado en 1941 e integrado por la biblioteca, colecciones y personal de la antes Secci&#x00F3;n de Entomolog&#x00ED;a del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN). Aunque ya se contaba con la valorada internacionalmente revista de Entomolog&#x00ED;a EOS, que recog&#x00ED;a art&#x00ED;culos de los mejores especialistas de la &#x00E9;poca, tanto nacionales como extranjeros, los fundadores de GRAELLSIA, Gonzalo Ceballos, Eduardo Zarco y Ram&#x00F3;n Agenjo (promotores de la revista seg&#x00FA;n cuenta el propio Agenjo, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">1968</xref>), identifican la necesidad de tener una revista &#x201C;Destinada a relacionar entre s&#x00ED; a todas aquellas -personas que sintiendo una afici&#x00F3;n a los estudios sobre insectos carecen de medios de orientaci&#x00F3;n y gu&#x00ED;a&#x201D; (CSIC, 1943). Nace as&#x00ED; GRAELLSIA, una publicaci&#x00F3;n con &#x00E1;nimo de acercar el mundo de los insectos a los aficionados y en el que los &#x201C;principiantes habr&#x00ED;an de encontrar un medio de expresi&#x00F3;n a sus observaciones y de relaci&#x00F3;n entre ellos mismos y el Instituto, alentando as&#x00ED; sus esfuerzos y encauz&#x00E1;ndolos debidamente&#x201D;<xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN0001">1</xref>.</p>
			<p>Sin embargo, hubo otras propuestas acerca del objeto y fines de la revista, como queda constancia en un expediente localizado en el Archivo Hist&#x00F3;rico del MNCN. En este documento titulado &#x201C;Proyecto de organizaci&#x00F3;n de una revista de Entomolog&#x00ED;a aplicada&#x201D;<xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN0002">2</xref>, Jos&#x00E9; del Ca&#x00F1;izo<xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN0003">3</xref> presenta a Eduardo Zarco, Secretario entonces del Instituto Espa&#x00F1;ol de Entomolog&#x00ED;a, sus ideas sobre c&#x00F3;mo deber&#x00ED;a ser la &#x201C;nonnata revista&#x201D;. Su prop&#x00F3;sito era que estuviese dirigida a &#x201C;Servir de medio de expresi&#x00F3;n en la prensa a cuantos cultivan la Entomolog&#x00ED;a aplicada (agr&#x00F3;nomos, forestales, m&#x00E9;dicos sanitarios, veterinarios, etc.) &#x2026;&#x201D; y que recogiera trabajos generales sobre entomolog&#x00ED;a tanto pura como aplicada, esta &#x00FA;ltima, una de las &#x00E1;reas a la que estaba dedicado el Instituto. Comenta Ca&#x00F1;izo en este documento c&#x00F3;mo ser&#x00ED;a su estructura, a qui&#x00E9;n se dirigir&#x00ED;a, posibles suscriptores, presupuesto, e incluso formato: &#x201C;Teniendo en cuenta que no se trata de una revista de car&#x00E1;cter genuinamente cient&#x00ED;fico, sino que en ella han de predominar los trabajos de divulgaci&#x00F3;n, informaci&#x00F3;n general, etc., su formato debe ser de aspecto agradable y su tama&#x00F1;o y tipos de impresi&#x00F3;n los adecuados a una f&#x00E1;cil y c&#x00F3;moda lectura&#x201D;. Tambi&#x00E9;n contiene un &#x201C;Anteproyecto de Sumario para el primer n&#x00FA;mero&#x201D;, con trabajos que efectivamente se publicaron en el volumen inicial. En este expediente se se&#x00F1;ala que se hab&#x00ED;a pensado en GRAELLSIA como nombre para la revista de la Asociaci&#x00F3;n Espa&#x00F1;ola de Entom&#x00F3;logos, sociedad que nunca lleg&#x00F3; a funcionar, comentando Ca&#x00F1;izo que, de llevar ese nombre, habr&#x00ED;a que indicar un subt&#x00ED;tulo &#x201C;Revista de Divulgaci&#x00F3;n Entomol&#x00F3;gica&#x201D;. Reconocemos en la GRAELLSIA que finalmente result&#x00F3; muchas de las ideas de este Proyecto.</p>
			<p>El 5 de febrero de 1943 Gonzalo Ceballos solicita permiso al CSIC para publicar un Bolet&#x00ED;n que incluir&#x00ED;a &#x201C;&#x2026; art&#x00ED;culos de alta divulgaci&#x00F3;n as&#x00ED; como todos aquellos datos bibliogr&#x00E1;ficos y noticias de inter&#x00E9;s &#x2026;&#x201D; y que &#x201C;&#x2026; podr&#x00ED;a denominarse GRAELLSIA en honor al preclaro entom&#x00F3;logo espa&#x00F1;ol del pasado siglo, D. Mariano de la Paz Graells &#x2026;&#x201D;<xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN0004">4</xref>. El 22 del mismo mes, el Secretario General del CSIC, Jos&#x00E9; Mar&#x00ED;a Albareda, comunica la autorizaci&#x00F3;n<xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN0005">5</xref>, naciendo as&#x00ED;, de manera oficial, una revista que este a&#x00F1;o cumple su septuag&#x00E9;simo aniversario.</p>
			<p>Las etapas de GRAELLSIA
			</p>
			<p>El an&#x00E1;lisis hist&#x00F3;rico, cronolog&#x00ED;a e identificaci&#x00F3;n de etapas por las que ha pasado la revista desde su fundaci&#x00F3;n ha sido expuesto, para los primeros 50 a&#x00F1;os de la revista, en un excelente art&#x00ED;culo publicado en el volumen 53 de Graellsia (Sanchiz &#x0026; Mart&#x00ED;n, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0025">1997</xref>), en el que tambi&#x00E9;n se incluyeron por vez primera los &#x00ED;ndices generales de la revista desde su fundaci&#x00F3;n (1943-1994). Remitimos al lector interesado a una lectura del citado art&#x00ED;culo y a&#x00F1;adimos aqu&#x00ED; el &#x00FA;ltimo periodo hist&#x00F3;rico de la revista, que ocupa los 20 &#x00FA;ltimos a&#x00F1;os, desde 1994 hasta la actualidad.</p>

			<p>Despu&#x00E9;s de que la Junta de Gobierno del CSIC decidiera en su reuni&#x00F3;n de 30 de octubre de 1992 suprimir, a partir de primero de enero de 1993, la subvenci&#x00F3;n destinada a la edici&#x00F3;n de GRAELLSIA, decisi&#x00F3;n que fue reprobada por el Claustro Cient&#x00ED;fico del MNCN, el Departamento de Biodiversidad del Museo acord&#x00F3; continuar con la edici&#x00F3;n de GRAELLSIA en r&#x00E9;gimen de autofinanciaci&#x00F3;n, restringi&#x00E9;ndola tem&#x00E1;ticamente a &#x201C;estudios relacionados con la Biodiversidad&#x201D;. Seg&#x00FA;n el editorial del volumen 49, en esta etapa la revista publica trabajos cient&#x00ED;ficos sobre &#x201C;Biodiversidad zool&#x00F3;gica, incluyendo estudios taxon&#x00F3;micos, faun&#x00ED;sticos, biogeogr&#x00E1;ficos, corol&#x00F3;gicos,

En consecuencia, a partir del volumen 50 la cabecera de GRAELLSIA pasa a la Sociedad de Amigos del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, encarg&#x00E1;ndose esta de su edici&#x00F3;n.</p>

			<title>2000-2014 &#x201C;GRAELLSIA. REVISTA DE ZOOLOG&#x00CD;A&#x201D; SOCIEDAD DE AMIGOS DEL MUSEO NACIONAL DE CIENCIAS NATURALES</title>
			<p>Trascurridos seis dif&#x00ED;ciles a&#x00F1;os desde que se iniciara la nueva etapa de GRAELLSIA, impulsada por la mencionada supresi&#x00F3;n de la subvenci&#x00F3;n del CSIC para su edici&#x00F3;n, la publicaci&#x00F3;n de la revista consigue consolidarse y en el editorial del volumen 56 se anuncia ya un nuevo impulso cient&#x00ED;fico y editorial. En el aspecto cient&#x00ED;fico se ampl&#x00ED;a el &#x00E1;mbito geogr&#x00E1;fico y temporal de los estudios publicados, dando cabida a toda la fauna mundial, f&#x00F3;sil y viviente, en las disciplinas Taxonom&#x00ED;a, Sistem&#x00E1;tica y Biogeograf&#x00ED;a, a la vez que se anima a los autores que publiquen en la revista a dar prioridad a los art&#x00ED;culos escritos en lengua inglesa. En el aspecto puramente editorial se anuncia el paso a la publicaci&#x00F3;n de varios n&#x00FA;meros al a&#x00F1;o, as&#x00ED; como n&#x00FA;meros extraordinarios de car&#x00E1;cter tem&#x00E1;tico, a la vez que se renueva la est&#x00E9;tica y dise&#x00F1;o de la revista haci&#x00E9;ndola m&#x00E1;s atractiva con la inclusi&#x00F3;n en la portada de un fondo de fotograf&#x00ED;as tomadas con microscopio electr&#x00F3;nico de barrido detalles morfol&#x00F3;gicos de distintos grupos zool&#x00F3;gicos. Se comienza tambi&#x00E9;n a enviar a autores y suscriptores los art&#x00ED;culos publicados en formato electr&#x00F3;nico.</p>
			<p>En otro editorial publicado tres a&#x00F1;os m&#x00E1;s tarde, en el volumen 59(1) de 2000, se anuncian nuevos cambios y novedades en la l&#x00ED;nea de mejorar la calidad y difusi&#x00F3;n de la revista. Uno de los m&#x00E1;s importantes es contar con un Comit&#x00E9; Cient&#x00ED;fico Internacional compuesto por cient&#x00ED;ficos de reconocido prestigio internacional. Otros cambios y novedades de &#x00ED;ndole pr&#x00E1;ctica que se anuncian son: 1/ Posibilidad de remitir los art&#x00ED;culos por correo electr&#x00F3;nico; 2/ Publicaci&#x00F3;n de un n&#x00FA;mero ilimitado de p&#x00E1;ginas por los suscriptores, adem&#x00E1;s de recibir sin coste 25 separatas y archivo en formato PDF de sus art&#x00ED;culos; y 3/ Suprimir la restricci&#x00F3;n de gratuidad a los autores no suscriptores, permiti&#x00E9;ndoles publicar sin coste hasta un m&#x00E1;ximo de 10 p&#x00E1;ginas por art&#x00ED;culo.</p>
			<p>Nuevos cambios importantes se anuncian en el editorial del volumen 66(1), publicado en el a&#x00F1;o 2010. El m&#x00E1;s destacado es el anuncio de que la revista ser&#x00E1; coeditada por la Sociedad de Amigos del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (SAM) y el Departamento de Publicaciones del CSIC (actualmente Editorial CSIC), recuperando as&#x00ED; la situaci&#x00F3;n anterior a 1993. Con este cambio la revista se integraba en la familia de las dem&#x00E1;s publicaciones peri&#x00F3;dicas del CSIC. Se anuncia tambi&#x00E9;n en esta etapa la disponibilidad de una edici&#x00F3;n electr&#x00F3;nica dentro de la Web de Revistas Cient&#x00ED;ficas del CSIC (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://graellsia.revistas.csic.es/index.php/graellsia">http://graellsia.revistas.csic.es/index.php/graellsia</ext-link>).</p>
			<p>Otros cambios se refieren al anuncio de la retirada del embargo de un a&#x00F1;o que exist&#x00ED;a para la descarga gratuita de los PDFs de los art&#x00ED;culos publicados, pasando a ser accesibles, de modo inmediato y gratuito, desde el momento de la publicaci&#x00F3;n on-line y antes de la versi&#x00F3;n en papel. Cabe destacar tambi&#x00E9;n el hecho de que se hace accesible al p&#x00FA;blico para su descarga gratuita la colecci&#x00F3;n de art&#x00ED;culos publicados en GRAELLSIA desde el a&#x00F1;o 2004 (actualmente esta accesible desde el volumen 51 de 1995), a la vez que se anuncia la implementaci&#x00F3;n progresiva del proceso completo de edici&#x00F3;n on-line. Cuatro a&#x00F1;os m&#x00E1;s tarde este proceso culmina con el anuncio en el volumen 69(2) del a&#x00F1;o 2013 del cambio definitivo de GRAELLSIA a formato exclusivamente electr&#x00F3;nico.</p>
			<p>
				Hacia el formato digital
			</p>
			<p>En el a&#x00F1;o 2013, dadas las vicisitudes econ&#x00F3;micas por las que pasan las revistas cient&#x00ED;ficas en los &#x00FA;ltimos a&#x00F1;os, as&#x00ED; como por la ola de modernidad imperante en la sociedad, el CSIC decide eliminar la publicaci&#x00F3;n en papel de todas las revistas del &#x00E1;rea de ciencia y algunas de humanidades que edita o coedita, como es el caso de nuestra GRAELLSIA. As&#x00ED; comienza su migraci&#x00F3;n a formato exclusivamente digital. Los est&#x00E1;ndares de publicaci&#x00F3;n en formato electr&#x00F3;nico (PDF, XHTLM y XML anotado) ya han sido desarrollados en Europa y en todo el mundo, de manera que solo queda comunicar la decisi&#x00F3;n a los suscriptores, realizar dicho cambio y librarnos de la nostalgia que sabemos nos va a producir la ausencia del volumen 70 en nuestras estanter&#x00ED;as.</p>

			<title>GRAELLSIA EN SUS 70 A&#x00D1;OS</title>
			<p>No cabe duda de que la revista GRAELLSIA ha sufrido una serie de cambios a lo largo de sus 70 a&#x00F1;os de existencia, variaciones que se han cuantificado utilizando una serie de sencillas variables historiogr&#x00E1;ficas, como es el n&#x00FA;mero de art&#x00ED;culos publicados, autores, idioma del texto, nacionalidad de los autores o si se describen taxa nuevos o no en los trabajos. Como datos generales, se puede resumir que en las p&#x00E1;ginas de GRAELLSIA han visto la luz 1211 trabajos correspondientes a 831 autores diferentes. El n&#x00FA;mero de art&#x00ED;culos totales aumenta hasta 1276 si se tienen en cuenta los textos correspondientes a los editores. El &#x00ED;ndice completo de la revista se puede encontrar en el siguiente enlace: <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://digital.csic.es/handle/10261/108423">http://digital.csic.es/handle/10261/108423</ext-link>. Con respecto a los grupos zool&#x00F3;gicos sobre los que versan los manuscritos, m&#x00E1;s de la mitad de los art&#x00ED;culos est&#x00E1;n dedicados a los Insectos y otros Artr&#x00F3;podos. Esto se corresponde con la propia historia de la revista ya que hasta 1987 era una serie dedicada exclusivamente a las investigaciones entomol&#x00F3;gicas en sentido amplio y tambi&#x00E9;n a la propia composici&#x00F3;n y riqueza espec&#x00ED;fica de la fauna que puebla el planeta. A partir de 1988, se incorporan trabajos sobre otros grupos de invertebrados y tambi&#x00E9;n sobre Vertebrados. En cuanto al &#x00E1;mbito geogr&#x00E1;fico de los trabajos, aunque se publican obras de muy diversas partes del mundo, son mayoritarios los que tratan sobre fauna ib&#x00E9;rica. As&#x00ED;, GRAELLSIA se constituye como una revista de consulta imprescindible para los investigadores interesados en la fauna del Mediterr&#x00E1;neo occidental ya que en sus publicaciones se pueden obtener gran cantidad de datos geogr&#x00E1;ficos y taxon&#x00F3;micos sobre la rica y diversa fauna ib&#x00E9;rica.</p>
			<p>Para el an&#x00E1;lisis del devenir de la revista a lo largo del tiempo, se han considerado 7 agrupaciones, cada una de las cuales re&#x00FA;ne 10 vol&#x00FA;menes, excepto el &#x00FA;ltimo de los periodos que abarca 9. Pasaremos a continuaci&#x00F3;n a comentar algunas tendencias puestas de manifiesto en los par&#x00E1;metros analizados.</p>
			<p>Se puede observar una clara tendencia de la revista a recoger en sus vol&#x00FA;menes cada vez m&#x00E1;s art&#x00ED;culos (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0001">Fig. 1</xref>). Solo en 12 de los 69 vol&#x00FA;menes analizados se publican menos de 10 art&#x00ED;culos, siendo el correspondiente al a&#x00F1;o 1948 (volumen 6) el que menos incluye, tan solo uno (Ribbe, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0024">1948</xref>) y el que m&#x00E1;s, el volumen 59 (a&#x00F1;o 2003) con 44 trabajos.</p>

			<p>A lo largo del tiempo se detecta tambi&#x00E9;n una evidente vocaci&#x00F3;n de internacionalizaci&#x00F3;n, caracter&#x00ED;stica que vemos reflejada en el n&#x00FA;mero cada vez mayor de autores extranjeros que la eligen como veh&#x00ED;culo para publicar sus trabajos (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0001">Fig. 1</xref>) y en el n&#x00FA;mero de art&#x00ED;culos publicados en ingl&#x00E9;s (167 en total), en crecimiento tambi&#x00E9;n en la &#x00FA;ltima d&#x00E9;cada (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0002">Fig. 2</xref>).</p>

			<p>Al igual que sucede en otras revistas del mismo &#x00E1;mbito cient&#x00ED;fico (Mart&#x00ED;n Albaladejo, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0023">2003</xref>; Bermeo Andrade et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0003">2009</xref>; Thomson Reuter, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0027">2012</xref>) en GRAELLSIA se puede observar c&#x00F3;mo los autores publican cada vez m&#x00E1;s en equipo y menos de forma individual, de manera que se eleva el n&#x00FA;mero medio de autores por publicaci&#x00F3;n (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0003">Fig. 3</xref>). Son rasgos estos, como ya hemos indicado, comunes a otras revistas tanto espa&#x00F1;olas como extranjeras y a la evoluci&#x00F3;n del quehacer de la Ciencia en general.</p>

			<p>Finalmente se ha analizado la tendencia en cuanto a publicar art&#x00ED;culos en los que se incluye alg&#x00FA;n taxon nuevo (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0004">Fig. 4</xref>) evidenci&#x00E1;ndose que cada vez la revista GRAELLSIA es un medio m&#x00E1;s atractivo para la descripci&#x00F3;n de taxones nuevos, correspondi&#x00E9;ndose as&#x00ED; con el cambio de rumbo que toma la revista en su 50 aniversario (a&#x00F1;o 1994), al restringir su tem&#x00E1;tica de Zoolog&#x00ED;a General a Diversidad Zool&#x00F3;gica. <title>LA NUEVA GRAELLSIA
			</title>
			<p>El anuncio en el volumen 69(2) del a&#x00F1;o 2013 del cambio de GRAELLSIA a formato exclusivamente electr&#x00F3;nico no supone un cambio en su objetivo cient&#x00ED;fico, que sigue siendo el mismo de los &#x00FA;ltimos a&#x00F1;os: ofrecer un espacio en el que publicar con rigor los datos que se generan acerca de Biodiversidad Zool&#x00F3;gica (Taxonom&#x00ED;a, Faun&#x00ED;stica, Biogeograf&#x00ED;a, Corolog&#x00ED;a, Evoluci&#x00F3;n y Conservaci&#x00F3;n), principalmente en el &#x00E1;mbito mediterr&#x00E1;neo y neotropical, admiti&#x00E9;ndose, por ello, el idioma espa&#x00F1;ol, aunque sean prioritarios los art&#x00ED;culos en lengua inglesa que, sin lugar a dudas incrementan su difusi&#x00F3;n.</p>
			<p>En los &#x00FA;ltimos a&#x00F1;os se han publicado n&#x00FA;meros monogr&#x00E1;ficos, algunos de ellos extraordinarios, dedicados, por ejemplo, a las colecciones del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales de Madrid (Graellsia, 53, 1997) o a cuestiones biogeogr&#x00E1;ficas [&#x201C;Estudios de Biogeograf&#x00ED;a, Biodiversidad y Conservaci&#x00F3;n en la Regi&#x00F3;n ibero-balear y macaron&#x00E9;sica&#x201D;, Graellsia, 59(2-3), 2003; &#x201C;Evaluaci&#x00F3;n del conocimiento y del estado de conservaci&#x00F3;n de la diversidad animal de Madrid&#x201D;, Graellsia, 62 Extra, 2006]. Tambi&#x00E9;n se ha dedicado espacio para la publicaci&#x00F3;n de cat&#x00E1;logos de distintos grupos animales y a distinta escala geogr&#x00E1;fica [&#x201C;Listado sistem&#x00E1;tico, sinon&#x00ED;mico y biogeogr&#x00E1;fico de los &#x00E1;caros orib&#x00E1;tidos del mundo&#x201D;, Graellsia, 60 Extra, 2004; &#x201C;Cat&#x00E1;logo sinon&#x00ED;mico de los t&#x00E1;xones &#x00ED;bero-baleares de la familia Meloidae&#x201D;, Graellsia, 66(2), 2010; &#x201C;Cat&#x00E1;logo de los Halictini Halictus Latreille, 1804 y Lasioglossum Curtis, 1833 (Hymenoptera, Apoidea, Halictidae) de la pen&#x00ED;nsula Ib&#x00E9;rica y de las islas Canarias&#x201D;, Graellsia, 69(2), 2013] y siempre ha habido espacio para recopilar anualmente los nuevos t&#x00E1;xones animales &#x00ED;bero-baleares y macaron&#x00E9;sicos publicados (v&#x00E9;anse Dorda, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0005">1995</xref>; Templado et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">1995</xref>; Fern&#x00E1;ndez, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0006">1996</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0007">1998</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0008">2000</xref>-<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2013</xref>). En el pasado, el coste econ&#x00F3;mico de la publicaci&#x00F3;n de estas obras, con gran n&#x00FA;mero de p&#x00E1;ginas impresas, no compensaba a muchas revistas, aunque el n&#x00FA;mero de citas que recibieran pudiera ser elevado. Sin embargo, en nuestro &#x00E1;nimo, siempre pes&#x00F3; m&#x00E1;s la utilidad de estas buenas obras de referencia y obligada consulta que otras cuestiones cremat&#x00ED;sticas. Actualmente este dilema no se plantea, ya que publicar en versi&#x00F3;n digital es mucho m&#x00E1;s econ&#x00F3;mico que hacerlo en papel y muchas revistas digitales, como ZooKeys o Zootaxa, publican actualmente este tipo de trabajos. No obstante, lejos de suponer competencia para GRAELLSIA, cada una tiene sus lectores y su propio espacio cient&#x00ED;fico, y es nuestra intenci&#x00F3;n seguir con esta l&#x00ED;nea de pol&#x00ED;tica editorial y publicar contenidos similares a los que albergaba la versi&#x00F3;n impresa.</p>
			<p>Una cosa bien cierta en la era digital es la rapidez de publicaci&#x00F3;n que juega a favor de autores, editores, revisores y del p&#x00FA;blico en general. Actualmente es posible abreviar mucho los tiempos entre el momento de la recepci&#x00F3;n de un manuscrito y la versi&#x00F3;n on-line, una vez revisada, maquetada y hecha accesible en las tres versiones que los est&#x00E1;ndares digitales internacionales aconsejan y promueven (PDF, XHTML y XML anotado). GRAELLSIA sigue editando un volumen anual con dos n&#x00FA;meros semestrales. Sin embargo, hoy por hoy el flujo de publicaci&#x00F3;n es continuo, los art&#x00ED;culos van apareciendo seg&#x00FA;n est&#x00E1;n listos, sin esperar a completar y componer un n&#x00FA;mero que debe pasar por imprenta y editarse en fecha fija. Esto supone una situaci&#x00F3;n ideal, ya que los resultados de la investigaci&#x00F3;n cient&#x00ED;fica pueden ser conocidos inmediatamente tras ser generados y validados por expertos revisores, cuya gesti&#x00F3;n del proceso tambi&#x00E9;n ha ganado en rapidez al poder realizarse v&#x00ED;a internet.</p>
			<p>Pues bien, nuestra idea de futuro es continuar aprovechando las ventajas que las nuevas tecnolog&#x00ED;as nos procuran para seguir publicando una revista que incremente su calidad, sea cada d&#x00ED;a m&#x00E1;s &#x00E1;gil, mantenga su trayectoria hist&#x00F3;rica y en la que sigan teniendo cabida los resultados de la investigaci&#x00F3;n b&#x00E1;sica que vaya generando la comunidad cient&#x00ED;fica internacional e hispanoparlante en particular.</p>
			<p>No podemos cerrar una etapa sin rendir alg&#x00FA;n peque&#x00F1;o homenaje a esta revista que ha sobrevivido 70 a&#x00F1;os y que contra viento y marea ha conseguido publicar un primer n&#x00FA;mero en el a&#x00F1;o 1943, cuya portada puede verse en la <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0005">figura 5</xref> y tras 70 vol&#x00FA;menes con 1211 art&#x00ED;culos en total, su &#x00FA;ltimo n&#x00FA;mero impreso (Graellsia 69, 2) tiene la portada que igualmente puede verse en la <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0005">figura 5</xref>.</p>

			<title>A LITTLE HISTORY</title>
			<p>Background</p>
			<p>The Proceedings of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) in 1943, included the Birth of the journal GRAELLSIA, a publication that arose within the Spanish Institute of Entomology, a center created in 1941 and composed of the library, collections and staff of the former Entomology Section of the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN). Although it counted on the internationally renowned journal of Entomology EOS, which included articles from the best specialists of the time, (both domestic and foreign), the founders of GRAELLSIA, Gonzalo Ceballos, Eduardo Zarco and Ram&#x00F3;n Agenjo (promoters of the journal as told by Agenjo, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">1968</xref>), identified the need for a journal &#x201C;Destined to connect those who feel a passion for studies on insects and who have no means of guidance and direction&#x201D; (CSIC, 1943). Thus GRAELLSIA was born, a publication with the intention of bringing the world of insects and enthusiasts in which &#x201C;&#x2026; inexperienced novices could find a way to present their observations and relations between themselves and the Institute, thereby encouraging efforts and channeling them appropriately&#x201D;<xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN0001">1</xref>.</p>
			<p>However, there were other proposals on the content and purpose of the journal, as recorded in the Historical Archive MNCN. This document entitled &#x201C;Proposed organization of a journal of Applied Entomology&#x201D; <xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN0002">2</xref>, presented by Jos&#x00E9; del Ca&#x00F1;izo<xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN0003">3</xref> to Eduardo Zarco, then Secretary of the Spanish Institute of Entomology, included his ideas of what a &#x201C;nonnata journal&#x201D; should be, his proposition was that it should be geared to &#x201C;Serve as a printed media to promote applied Entomology (agronomists, foresters, medical doctors, veterinarians, etc.) &#x2026;&#x201D; and be a journal to divulge general articles on both pure and applied entomology, the latter being one of the areas to which the Institute was dedicated. Ca&#x00F1;izo commented in this document on the structure, target audience, potential subscribers, budget, and even format: &#x201C;Given that it is not a genuine scientific journal, general information and dissemination articles should prevail and the format must have an appealing aspect with the size and type face suitable for easy and comfortable reading. The document also contains a &#x201C;Draft Summary for the first issue&#x201D; with articles which were actually published in the first volume. The name of GRAELLSIA was also noted in this document, originally thought for the Journal of the Spanish Association of Entomologists, a society that never functioned. Ca&#x00F1;izo commented that bearing this name, a subtitle would have to be indicated &#x201C;Journal of Entomological Dissemination&#x201D;. We recognize that many of the ideas in this project were included in GRAELLSIA.</p>
			<p>On February 5th, 1943 Gonzalo Ceballos requested to the CSIC permission to publish a newsletter that would include &#x201C;&#x2026; high dissemination articles as well as all bibliographic data and news of interest &#x2026;&#x201D; and &#x201C;that it could be called&#x201D; GRAELLSIA &#x201C;in honor of the illustrious Spanish Entomologist of the last century, D. Mariano de la Paz Graells &#x2026;&#x201D;<xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN0004">4</xref>. On the 22nd of the same month, the Secretary General of the CSIC, Jos&#x00E9; Mar&#x00ED;a Albareda communicated the authorization<xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN0005">5</xref>, giving birth officially to a journal which this year celebrates its seventieth anniversary</p>

				The phases of GRAELLSIA
			</p>
			<p>The historical analysis, timeline and identification of the stages which the journal has gone through since its foundation for the first 50 years are compiled in an excellent article published in volume 53 of Graellsia (Sanchiz &#x0026; Mart&#x00ED;n, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0025">1997</xref>), which also included for the first time overall indicators of the journal since its foundation (1943-1994). We refer the interested reader to this article and add here that we have included the last historical period covering the last 20 years, from 1994 to the present.</p>

			<title>1994-2000 &#x201C;GRAELLSIA. JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY&#x201D; SOCIETY OF FRIENDS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCES</title>
			<p>After the Board of Governors of the CSIC decided at its meeting on October 30th 1992 to eliminate, as from the first of January 1993, the subsidy for editing GRAELLSIA, a decision which was rejected by the research staff of the MNCN, The Department of Biodiversity of the Museum agreed to continue editing GRAELLSIA at their own expenses, restricting the journal to a themes of &#x201C;Biodiversity-related studies&#x201D;. According to the editorial of volume 49, at this stage the journal publishes scientific papers on &#x201C;zoological biodiversity, including taxonomic studies, faunistic, biogeographic, chorologic, evolutionary and conservation, with preference on a Hispanic geographic area&#x201D;. Consequently, from volume 50 the header of GRAELLSIA passes to the Society of Friends of the National Museum of Natural Sciences, who is in charge of editing it.</p>

			<title>2000-2014 &#x201C;GRAELLSIA. JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY&#x201D; SOCIETY OF FRIENDS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY</title>
			<p>Six difficult years have elapsed since the new phase of GRAELLSIA, driven by the suppression of the CSIC grant for editing. The publication of the journal continues to be consolidated and in the editorial of volume 56 a new scientific impulse and editorial of the journal was announced. On the scientific side the geographical and temporal scope of the published studies expands, making a place for all world fauna, fossil and living, in the disciplines of Taxonomy, Systematics and Biogeography, while the authors are encouraged to publish and prioritize articles written in English. From a purely editorial point the journal announced the publication of several numbers a year as well as extraordinary thematic issues, while the aesthetics and design of the journal was renewed, making it more attractive with the inclusion on the cover of background pictures showing morphological details of different zoological groups taken with a scanning electron microscope. The journal also begins to send to authors and subscribers their published articles in electronic formats.</p>
			<p>In another editorial published three years later, in Volume 59(1), 2000, new changes and developments in the line of improved quality and dissemination of the journal were announced. One of the most important being the introduction of an International Scientific Committee composed of renowned scientists. Other changes and innovations of a practical nature were: 1/ Ability to submit articles by email; 2/ Publication of an unlimited number of pages for subscribers who receive reprints at no cost and a PDF format file of their articles; and 3/ Removing the restriction of non-subscribing authors, permitting no costs for up to 10 pages per article.</p>
			<p>Important new changes were announced in the editorial of Volume 66(1) published in 2010. The most important being the announcement that the journal will be published jointly by the Society of Friends of the National Museum of Natural Sciences (SAM) and the Department of Publications of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (now Editorial CSIC), thus recovering the situation prior to 1993. With this change, the journal was integrated into the group of other periodicals of the CSIC. The availability of an electronic edition in the Web of Science Scientific Journals of the CSIC (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://graellsia.revistas.csic.es/index.php/graellsia">http://graellsia.revistas.csic.es/index.php/graellsia</ext-link>) was also announced at this stage.</p>
			<p>Other changes related to the announcement of the withdrawal of the embargo that existed, a year for free download of PDF published articles, becoming immediately accessible and free, from the time of online publication and before the paper version. Also noteworthy is the fact that journal is made publicly available for free download, and includes the collection of articles published in GRAELLSIA since 2004 (currently accessible from this volume 51, 1995). At the same time the progressive implementation process for full online edition was announced. Four years later, this process culminates with the notification in volume 69(2) 2013 the final change to GRAELLSIA to an exclusively electronic format.</p>
			<p>Towards the digital format</p>
			<p>In 2013, and given the economic hardship that scientific journals have gone through in recent years, as well as a prevailing modern society, the CSIC decides to eliminate the paper publication of all journals in the area of science, edited or co-edited, as is the case of our GRAELLSIA. Therefore the movement to a digital only format begins. The standards published in electronic format (PDF, XHTLM and XML annotated) have been developed in Europe and around the world. It is now a case of communicating the decision to the subscribers, making the change and leaving behind the nostalgia that we know we will produce with the absence of volume 70 on our shelves.</p>
		</sec>
		<sec id="S20004">
			<title>70 YEARS OF GRAELLSIA</title>
			<p>There is no doubt that the journal GRAELLSIA suffered a series of changes during its 70 years history, variations which have been quantified using a series of simple historiographical variables, such as the number of published articles, authors, text language, nationality of the authors and whether or not new taxa are described in the articles. In summarizing the data the pages of GRAELLSIA have seen 1211 articles corresponding to 831 different authors. This number increases to 1276 if the contributions made by the editors are included. The complete index of the journal can be found at the following link: <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://digital.csic.es/handle/10261/108423">http://digital.csic.es/handle/10261/108423</ext-link>. With regard to the zoological groups, most manuscripts deal with insects, since more than half of the articles are devoted to them and other arthropods. This is consistent with the history of the journal, because until 1987 it was a series dedicated to broadly based entomological research and also to the composition and species richness of the fauna that inhabit the planet. Since 1988, articles on other groups of invertebrates and vertebrates have been incorporated. Regarding the geographical area of the work, although many have been published from different parts of the world, the majority deal with Iberian fauna. Therefore GRAELLSIA is considered to be an essential journal for researchers interested in the fauna of the Occidental Mediterranean region, and contains large amounts of geographical and taxonomic data on the rich and diverse Iberian fauna.</p>
			<p>For the analysis of the evolution of the journal over time, we considered seven groups, each of which brings together 10 volumes, with the last period covering nine volumes. We now turn to discuss some tendencies in the parameters analyzed. One can clearly see a trend in the journal volumes with the number of articles increasing (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0001">Fig. 1</xref>). Of the 69 volumes analyzed, only 12 had fewer than 10 published articles. The year 1948 (Volume 6) has the least number of articles, only one (Ribbe, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0024">1948</xref>) and the most in volume 59 (2003) with 44 articles.</p>
			<p>Over time an obvious movement towards internationalization is also detected a feature that we see reflected in the increasing number of foreign authors who choose it as a medium to publish their work (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0001">Fig. 1</xref>) and the number of articles published in English (167 in total), which has steadily grown in the last decade (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0002">Fig. 2</xref>).</p>
			<p>As in other journals in the same scientific field (Mart&#x00ED;n Albaladejo, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0023">2003</xref>; Bermeo Andrade et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0003">2009</xref>; Thomson Reuter, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0027">2012</xref>) in GRAELLSIA authors now publish with more partners and less as a single author, therefore the average number of authors per publication rises (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0003">Fig. 3</xref>). These traits as already mentioned, are common to both Spanish and foreign journals and is a trait of current science in general.</p>
			<p>Finally we analyzed the trend in publishing articles in which new taxa were included (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0004">Fig. 4</xref>) with increasing evidence that, the journal GRAELLSIA is an attractive media for the description of new taxa, coinciding with the change in direction of the journal in its 50th year (1994) restricting the subject area from General Zoology to Zoological Diversity. The list of new taxa published in the series can be found in the document <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://digital.csic.es/handle/10261/108423">http://digital.csic.es/handle/10261/108423</ext-link>.</p>

			<title>THE NEW GRAELLSIA</title>
			<p>The announcement in volume 69(2) 2013 of the change to an exclusively electronic format does not imply a change in the scientific objective, which remains the same in recent years: to provide a space in which to publish rigorous data generated on Zoological Biodiversity (Taxonomy, Fauna, Biogeography, Chorology, Evolution and Conservation), mainly in the Mediterranean and neotropical zones, admitting therefore, the Spanish language, although the articles in the English language are priority which, increase their diffusion. In recent years there have been special issues, some of them extraordinary, dedicated for example, to the collections of the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales de Madrid (Graellsia, 53, 1997) or biogeographic questions (&#x201C;Studies of Biogeography, Biodiversity and Conservation in the Ibero-Balearic and Macaronesian Region&#x201D; Graellsia, 59(2-3), 2003&#x201D;; &#x201C;Assessment of knowledge and conservation status of animal diversity of Madrid&#x201D; Graellsia, 62 Extra, 2006). It also has dedicated space for the publication of catalogs of different animal groups and distinct geographical scales (&#x201C;Systematic List, synonymic and biogeographical of oribatid mites of the world&#x201D;, Graellsia, 60 Extra, 2004; &#x201C;Synonymic catalog of Iberian-Balearic taxa of the family Meloidae&#x201D; Graellsia 66(2), 2010; &#x201C;A catalogue of the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands bees of the Halictini Halictus Latreille, 1804 and Lasioglossum Curtis, 1833 (Hymenoptera, Apoidea, Halictidae)&#x201D;, Graellsia, 69(2), 2013) and there has always been space to gather annually new taxa of the Ibero-Balearic and Macaronesian regions (see Dorda, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0005">1995</xref>; Templado et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">1995</xref>; Fern&#x00E1;ndez, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0006">1996</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0007">1998</xref>
				<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0008">2000</xref>-<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2013</xref>). In the past, the economic cost of the publication of these works, a large number of printed pages, for many jounals was not viable, although the number of citations received may be high. However, we think, the usefulness of these works of reference and consultation outweigh other chrematistic issues. Currently this dilemma does not arises because digital publishing is much cheaper than publishing on paper and many digital journals including ZooKeys or Zootaxa, now publish this type of work. However, far from being competitors to GRAELLSIA, each has its readers and its own scientific area, and we intend to continue this line of editorial policy and publish similar content to that of the printed version.</p>
			<p>It is a certainty that in the digital age is the quickness of publication favors authors, editors, reviewers and the general public. Currently it is possible to reduce the time between the receipt of a manuscript to the online version once revised, laid out and made accessible in three versions advised and promoted by international standards (PDF, XHTML and XML annotated). GRAELLSIA continues to edit an annual volume with two (6 monthly) numbers. Today the flow of publication is continuous; articles are appearing as they are ready, without waiting for completion of a complete issue that must pass through editing and printing on a fixed date. This represents an ideal situation, since the results of scientific research can be known immediately after being generated and validated by expert reviewers, whose management of the process has also gained promptness as revision can be made via internet.</p>
			<p>Our idea of the future is to continue using the advantages that new technologies afford us to continue publishing a journal, allowing us to increase its quality, and maintain its historical trajectory, and which will continue to publish the results of basic research to an international and in particular the Spanish-speaking scientific community.</p>
			<p>We can not finish this phase without paying a small tribute to this journal that has survived 70 years and against all odds managed to publish the first issue in 1943, the cover can be seen in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0005">Figure 5</xref>, and after 70 volumes with 1211 articles in total, the last printed number (Graellsia 69, 2) has a cover which can also be seen in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0005">Figure 5</xref>.</p>
